What you will learn
This course explores the vital role of doulas as non-medical support professionals who provide emotional, physical, and informational assistance throughout pregnancy, labor, and postpartum, while clearly distinguishing their complementary but distinct function from medical providers like midwives and obstetricians. Students will learn how doulas empower birthing people while understanding the scope and limitations of doula care. The course concludes with an overview of critical maternal warning signs that require medical attention, including severe headaches, vision changes, excessive bleeding, and signs of preeclampsia, ensuring doulas can appropriately recognize when to refer their clients to medical care.
